According to Dr Robert Fletcher and Dr Kathern Fairfield, Harvard researchers.. “Insufficient vitamin intakes is apparently a cause of chronic diseases.
Recent evidence has shown that suboptimal levels of vitamins (below standard), even well above those causing deficiency syndromes, are a risk factor for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis.
A large portion of the general population is apparently at risk for this reason “.
It was seen that when these two well known researchers analysed several nutrients such as A, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, Folic acid, and several of the carotenoids, lycopene, and lutein and concluded that:
- •Low levels of folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 increased the risk of some cancers in men and women. These nutrients were essential for proper metabolism of homocysteine.
- •Low levels or inadequate amounts of folic acid causes the the risk of neural tube defects and some cancers.
- •The lack or inadequate amounts of vitamin D when taken with calcium is associated with osteoporosis and the fracturing of bones as seen in many women.
- •Anaemia and neurological disorders are seen when inadequate amounts of B12 are present in the diet
- •Breast and lung cancers are seen to increase in females when low dietary intakes of carotenoids such as seen in brightly coloured vegetables, fruits are not present.
- •The risk of cancer is more prominent when vitamin C levels are not adequate
- •Women may experience poor vision disorders and impaired immune function when levels of vitamin A are low.
Today JAMA strongly declares that scientific evidence shows that supplementation is prudent for optimum health.
