Over the last decade the importance of vitamin D has become more significant and in the forefront of research. It has been common knowledge that vitamin D plays an important role in helping the body to absorb calcium and bone mineralisation. Limited dietary sources of vitamin D and insufficient sun exposure can contribute to vitamin D deficiencies.

Adequate levels of vitamins and minerals are essential for optimal neural functioning. A high proportion of individuals, including children, suffer from deficiencies in one or more vitamins or minerals.

A recent UK-based study investigated whether daily supplementation with vitamins/minerals could modulate cognitive performance and mood in healthy children.

In this investigation, eighty-one healthy children aged from 8 to 14 years underwent laboratory assessments of their cognitive performance and mood on the first and last days of 12 weeks’ supplementation with a commercially available vitamins/mineral product. The assesment was done at pre-dose, 1h and 3h post-dose. Interim assessments were also completed at home after 4 and 8 weeks at 3 h post-dose. Each assessment comprised completion of a cognitive battery, which included tasks assessing mood and the speed and accuracy of attention and aspects of memory (secondary, semantic and spatial working memory).

The vitamin/mineral group performed more accurately on two attention tasks: ‘Arrows’ choice reaction time task at 4 and 8 weeks; and ‘Arrow Flankers’ choice reaction time task at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Picture Recognition errors showed significant decrement at 12 weeks.

While mood was not modulated in any interpretable manner, the author believe that these results suggest that vitamin/mineral supplementation has the potential to improve brain function in healthy children, and warrant further investigation.

Births that take place prior to 37 weeks of gestation have been associated with developmental disabilities and decreased survival. It is also known that women who have low plasma folate concentrations during pregnancy are at higher risk of giving birth prematurely.

A May 2009 article published in the PLoS Medicine journal reports that women who consumed folic acid supplements for a year or more before conceiving experienced a significantly lower risk of preterm births.

Natural length of pregnancy was defined as gestational age at delivery in pregnancies with no medical or obstetrical complications that would make early delivery necessary. Spontaneous preterm birth was defined as duration of pregnancy between 20 and 37 weeks without those complications.

The risk of preterm delivery was directly related to the duration of folic supplementation. Compared to women who did not supplement, women who supplemented for at least one year prior to conception experienced a 70 percent lower risk of premature delivery between the 20 and 28 week of gestation, and a 50 percent decrease between the 28 and 32 week.

Pre-conception folic acid supplementation is associated with a 50-70 percent reduction in the incidence of early spontaneous preterm birth, and the risk of preterm birth is decreased the most in women who supplement the longest before conception.

It is well known that diet plays an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes, but less is known about the influence of specific nutrients on non-Western populations. A report published in the March 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition revealed a protective effect of calcium and magnesium against diabetes in a large group of Chinese women.

The study involved 64,191 women participated in the Shanghai Women’s Health Study, living in Shanghai,China. Analysis of dietary questionnaire responses determined calcium and magnesium intake.

Women whose intake was in the highest group at an average of 649.6 milligrams per day had a 27 percent lower risk of diabetes than those whose intake was in the lowest group at 277.5 milligrams. Women whose intake of magnesium was highest at an average of 318.1 milligrams per day experienced a 20 percent lower risk compared with those in the lowest category of intake. Dairy intake was also related to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers did not have information on vitamin D intake, but the protective effect of dairy products could be partly due to their vitamin D content as well as calcium. The combination of vitamin D and calcium has been associated with a reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes in previous research.

An article published in the British Journal of Nutrition summarizes the roles of select vitamins and trace elements in immune function. Adequate intakes of micronutrients are required for the immune system to function efficiently. Micronutrient deficiency suppresses immunity by affecting antibody responses, leading to imbalances in the immune system. This situation increases susceptibility to infections, which increases disease and death risk. In addition, infections aggravate micronutrient deficiencies by reducing nutrient intake, increasing losses, and interfering with utilization by altering metabolic pathways. Inadequate intakes of micronutrients are common in people with eating disorders, smokers (active and passive), individuals with chronic alcohol abuse, certain diseases, during pregnancy and lactation, and in the elderly.

Micronutrients contribute to the body’s natural defenses on three levels by supporting physical barriers (skin/mucosa), cellular immunity, and antibody production. Vitamins A, C, E, and the mineral zinc assist in enhancing the skin barrier function. Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, and folic acid, and the minerals iron, zinc, copper and selenium work synergistically to support the protective activities of the immune cells. Finally, all these micronutrients, with the exception of vitamin C and iron, are essential for the production of antibodies.

Overall, inadequate intake and status of these vitamins and minerals may lead to a suppressed immune system, which increases the risk of infections and aggravates malnutrition. Therefore, supplementation with a multivitamin that includes these micronutrients can support the body’s natural defense system by enhancing all three levels of immunity.

Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) is an adaptogenic herb that has been used as potent energy tonic for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Although we do not yet fully understand the mechanism for many of Ginseng’s medicinal benefits, modern science using controlled clinical trials began to unravel scientific evidence on the health benefits of Ginseng supplementation. Single doses of the traditional herbal treatment Panax ginseng have recently been shown to lower blood glucose levels and elicit cognitive improvements in healthy, overnight-fasted volunteers.

These young adults then consumed capsules containing either a Panax ginseng extract or a placebo, and 30 minutes later a drink containing glucose or placebo. A further 30 minutes later (i.e. 60 minutes post-baseline/capsules) they completed the “cognitive demand” battery six times in immediate succession. The participants were divided into four groups: Placebo (0mg Ginseng/0 mg glucose); Ginseng (200mg Ginseng/0 mg glucose); Glucose (0 mg Ginseng/25 g glucose); or Ginseng/Glucose (200 mg Ginseng/25 g glucose). Blood glucose levels were measured prior to the day’s treatment, and before and after the post-dose completions of the battery.

These results confirm that Panax Ginseng may possess glucoregulatory properties and can enhance cognitive performance. The author further hypothesized that the cognitive improvements may be related to the glycemic properties of Panax Ginseng.
====================================================================
Rhodiola Rosea Improves Physical and Cognitive Function

Rhodiala Rosea is a herbal plant that grows in the cold regions of the world, and has been widely known as an adaptogen. Numerous studies have demonstrated that Rhodiola rosea enhances cognitive and physical performance.

Recently a 12-wk German study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a commercially available Rhodiola rosea extract (200mg) that also contains supportive nutrients including vitamins E, B6, B12, folate, and magnesium.

120 adults with physical and cognitive deficiencies participated in this study. Two different dosage regimens were used. One group of 60 (group 1) took 2 capsules orally in the morning after breakfast, and the other group (group 2) took 1 capsule after breakfast and 1 after lunch. Three medical examinations were performed during the course of the study (at baseline, after 6 wk, and after 12 wk). The evaluated symptoms were divided into physical disturbances such as exhaustion, decreased motivation, daytime sleepiness, decreased libido, sleep disturbances, and cognitive complaints (eg, concentration deficiencies, forgetfulness, decreased memory, susceptibility to stress, irritability).

A statistically highly significant improvement in physical and cognitive deficiencies was observed at the end of the study in both groups, as well as in the separately evaluated groups 1 and 2. Improvements in group 1 were more pronounced than in group 2. Improvements in physical performance were observed for 86% of participants in the combined overall group, 92% in group 1, and 79 % in group 2. Improved cognitive performance was demonstrated in 77% of participants in the overall group, 90% in group 1, and in 64% in group 2.

Although the exact mode of action of Rhodiola rosea extract remains unknown, the results of this study are very promising. The positive effect of Rhodiola rosea is supported by the other ingredients: vitamins E, B6, B12, magnesium, and folate. The study author further suggests that such nutritional regime can be recommended as a supportive treatment option for adults with physical and cognitive deficiencies; however, placebo-controlled clinical trials are still needed to confirm these promising findings.

In a recent analysis, researchers uncovered an association between taking prenatal multivitamins and a decreased risk for pediatric brain tumors, neuroblastomas, and leukemia.

In a paper published in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, a Canadian team of researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the potential protective effect of prenatal multivitamins on several pediatric cancers. Several large medical databases were searched for studies on multivitamin supplementation and pediatric cancers published in all languages from 1960 to July 2005. Rates of cancers in the children of women supplemented with multivitamins were compared with those of unsupplemented women. Seven articles met the inclusion criteria and were used for this review.

Results from the review showed a protective effect of multivitamins on leukemia, pediatric brain tumors and neuroblastoma. The researchers concluded that although the individual components linked to the protective benefit are unknown, prenatal multivitamins taken during pregnancy are associated with a reduced incidence of certain pediatric cancers and leukemia.

In a recent study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, researchers evaluated the effect of grape seed procyanidin intake on rats fed a high-fat diet. High fat diets are known to cause an increase in inflammation that is often related to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Rats were randomly grouped to receive a low-fat (LF) diet, a high-fat (HF) diet, or a high-fat diet supplemented with procyanidins from grape seed (HFPE) for 19 weeks. C-reactive protein (CRP) and other compounds that are considered markers for inflammation were measured.

High levels of CRP are an indication of inflammation, and as expected, rats fed the HF diet showed an enhanced production of CRP. In contrast, the rats fed the high-fat diet with added grape seed showed a decrease in plasma CRP. Decreased plasma CRP was attributed to grape seed procyanidins decreasing synthesis of CRP in the liver. Grape seed extract was also related to an increase in adiponectin, an antiinflammatory compound.

These results suggest a beneficial effect of grape seed extract on cardiovascular disease and other metabolic disorders related to inflammation.
